Hannah Montana almost naked? Disney and fans not amused

April 28th, 2008, 12:01 pm · 48 Comments · posted by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

Just in case your kids have been yearning to see what Disney’s Hannah Montana would look like if she were half naked, emerging from bed and clutching sheets to cover her privates, tell them to check out the June issue of Vanity Fair magazine.

Copyright Vanity Fair 2008

The actress who plays Hannah, Miley Cyrus, is 15 years old. Her parents were at the photo shoot where the famous portrait photographer Annie Leibowitz shot Miley for her profile in the well-known magazine.

At the time, everyone was thrilled with the photos, according to Vanity Fair spokespeople. Only after an uproar from fans objecting to the defilement of her squeaky-clean Disney sitcom image did Miley say she’s embarrassed by the picture.

But it’s not only the photos that show that little Hannah Montana is growing up. The article starts off quoting Miley as saying that the racy TV offering “Sex in the City” is her favorite show, and that parts of the Hannah Montana sitcom were developed along the same lines.

“Hannah Montana” is one of my kids’ favorite shows and a huge hit for the Disney Channel. I let them watch it because, even though the show portrays a rock star, the scripts generally portray good moral values of friendship and honesty. And there’s no sex other than a little mild flirtation.

But these latest photos show that little Hannah won’t be little much longer. It’s the latest in a long trend toward sexualization of children.

I can see how her parents, (her dad is singer Billy Ray Cyrus), could permit the famous photographer to shoot Miley in a suggestive bedroom pose. Supposedly she looks topless but actually was covered in front, according to Vanity Fair.miley_21.jpg

And, if it was your own kid, it wouldn’t look that shocking to see them emerging from a tangle of bedcovers. It would just look sweet.

But when the girl emerging from the bedcovers is hot enough to make teenage boys take their copies of Vanity Fair and disappear into locked bathrooms, it’s time to draw the line.

And, hello, I know the Cyrus family is used to fame and photographers, but this is Vanity Fair we’re talking about. The magazine that put a naked pregnant Demi Moore on the cover. They’re not familiar with the concept of demure.

When the news came over my TV this morning about Hannah and her racy photos, I hurried to shut it off before the kids saw it. There’s enough pressure on them already to grow up too fast. They just don’t need Miley to help them do it.

Here’s the Vanity Fair article, by the way, if you want to read it, with more photos and behind-the-scenes photos.

I am outraged by the recent photos of Miley Cyrus.
she claims to be wholesome and pure; she even wears or maybe she no longer is wearing her purity ring. The only reason I let my daughter watch her or take her to her concerts is for that reason. I will no longer let my daughter be corrupted by this.
It’s simply not okay to take these type of pictures and then simply say, oops I am not perfect everyone make mistakes (sounds like her song) life imitating art. She knew some how these pictures would emerge onto the internet where thousands of children look her up.
I will continue to pray for you Miley that you will find your way back to the LORD; I am not saying you left, however what I am saying if you are living for him these type of things should not come in to your thoughts for you to act on them.
And remain pure, be that beacon that our society truly needs for the generation.

  • Jenny Angelici says:

Personally I think Annie Leibowitz crossed the line here. After all this is a 15 year old girl. Okay, maybe she’s not actually naked under the sheet but the implication is there. Miley Cyrus is indeed an interesting subject and the creative direction behind the shoot could have gone in many directions. I just wish Leibowitz would have taken a different route.

Hmmm…maybe I’m just jealous of all the attention Miley is getting over her racy photos. The press didn’t even report on my midriff baring 80’s photo that I posted on my blog. The injustice of it all!

  • carrie says:

Whats the problem?…Her parents were at the shoot, if there was a problem they would say so..she wasn’t naked..and the kids who watch hannah montana are too young to even know whats going on. Whats the problem…people just want to make something thats nothing an issue cause maybe their bored with their lives.

  • Kathy says:

One other note to point out - being that I am open and honest with my kids, I’ve warned my daughter that Miley is growing up and she’s not going to stay the way she is - not to say that she’s bad or heading that way but just that… HELLOOOO people grow up, mature and no one stays the same. What’s wrong with the mothers who don’t see that and explain to their child as well. She’s can’t stay little Hannah Montana and be a teeny-bopper forever - I think she’ll stay true and sweet but she’ll also outgrow 7-10 year olds - its inevitable!

  • Jenny says:

Miley - I see bad posture. I think it’s because you were uncomfortable with this shot. You need to learn from it and share that with your fans. Use this opportunity to encourage young people to take a stand for themselves and have high standards for themselves, expecially the young girls who watach your every move. You did not follow your inner voice. Talk about that. Neither did Grama and teacher. I’ll bet they were uncomfortable with it too. Talk about it. You need to show that you too make mistakes but you can learn from them and move on. And help other young girls from doing the same or something similar.

I’m sure mom/dad will not be leaving photo shoots early again. And, they are going to take more time to get outside the box and think, think, think. This is their lesson and what they need to share with other parents. We can all learn from these types of situations.

In Florida we had a perv. make friends with a family to get to their young boy whom he molested and killed. He saw his picture in the local newspaper for sports and posed as a photographer. He befriended the whole family. Having learned of this, I chose to not let my kids have their pics. in the papers, nor their names on their school backpacks, etc. Let’s face it, there is darkness in the world we live in.

If there must be blame, all should take their share. Annie Leibowitz - I’m not impressed! Interesting that the clothes came off after mom/dad left. SHAME ON YOUYOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOU. CONTINUE TO TAKE THE COUNSEL OF YOUR PARENTS, BUT LISTEN TO THAT INNER VOICE TOO!!! Us girls need to do that.

Learn from it, talk about it, share with your fans…then go and have fun and be a young lady of 15. Don’t be in a hurry to grow up–it’s not that great!

  • Jenny says:

Sorry, that message went out before I was done.

MILEY — YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOU, YOUR BODY, YOUR LIFE! THIS IS NOT A DRESS REHEARSAL — FOLLOW YOUR PARENTS COUNSEL AND YOUR INNER VOICE.

And yes, you too are allowed to make mistakes—-and you will!

What’s next for Disney? A hardcore XXX franchise for its young stars when the turn 18? Pop their birthday cherry bonanza.

Disney exploits children. Disney = Pedo.

Boycott Disney. Turn off your tvs. Don’t consume this raunch!

Television should only have religiously based broadcasting on it.

Our country was founded on good Christian morals and our television programming should reflect that.

If it is good enough for the Mission Viejo City Council it is good enough for me!

    Praise him!

  • BigBud says:

Usually the people that point fingers and condemn others for what they believe to be immoral are closet deviates themselves. People that cheat on their taxes, cheat on their spouses, and tell innocent white lies every once in awhile.
Miley has done nothing to be ashamed of. Stop verbally “stoning” her. They were tastefully done photos of a rising star. And as for the Myspace photos it’s normal teenage behavior.
So get off your high horses and take a look at what you were doing and thinking as a youngster.
I agree with Concerned Citizen. You hit the nail on the head. Bravo!

  • Kate says:

Okay…I get the controvery over Ms. Cyrus’ degree of dress and pouty pose in the cover of Vanity Fair. What I don’t get is the time…energy…thought…words wasted on it.
I want people to talk about the real issues that profoundly effect our youth. Here is just one example.
    Take this quiz:
How many American households are affected by a serious mental illness?
Did you guess one in four? Because that’s the most recent stat.
Did you know that nearly 10% of all people suffer from a serious mental illness?
Did you know that 80% of those diagnosed with bipolar disorder self-medicate, thus developing issues of addiction on top of their genetically-caused illness?
Did you know that a vast majority of those incarcerated at all levels–highest at over 70% in juvenile facilities–cost taxpayers millions a year and have diagnosed mental illnesses that would be cheaper to treat?
Did you know that the average age of onset is 17 and that many of the world’s greatest minds are lost to the stigma and symptoms of mental illness?
Really folks…there are a lot more pertinent things to discuss with our kids and in our public forums. Knowledge, not gossip and conjecture, is power. I invite you to to my website at http://www.katemclaughlin.net to learn more.

Its amazing to me how Miley’s parents (who were supposedly at the photo shoot) have not said a word in her defense. I dont believe the outcome of these pictures were a surprize Miley and her parents and cohorts all knew what they were doing when this was being done. It is only embarrassing NOW because of the public outcry. They left their 15 yr old daughter to make a statement to the public? C’mon what kinda parents are they? Funny how millions of dollars will cause humans to stray from their so called “christian principles”. None of this surprizes me. Money is the idol they worship.

  • denise says:

I cant believe that her parents allowed this to happen. Wasn’t her
daddy there with her? HELLOO!!!!! Then again, I truly believe this when ever stupid, questionable stuff like this happens, bad publicity is better than none at all. Who would want their kids to see this stuff?
But, like i said, her dad is in the same category as that jerk of a mom
who allowed her daughter to lie [about her dad] in order to win Hannah
Montana concert tickets! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!! These celebrities we adore and admire are just people. They do stupid stuff just like we do,
although our stuff will never be put in a magazine-for everyone to see!
I think the photo’s are weird-and they can send the wrong message to young impressionable girls who see Miley as a role model. I wouldn’t allow my daughter to do a photo like that-regardless of who the photographer is.

  • Briana says:

Well, first off, I would like to say that this photo does not offend me. 2nd, she is 15 years old. Her parents are supposed to be looking out for her. I do believe they were at that photo shoot and approved what the photographer was doing. She isn’t old enough to make a decision like that by herself. Why in the world would the photographer think it would be okay to shoot her in that way, artistic or not? I think that everyone is putting too much emphasis on “What was Miley thinking?” when we should all be asking “What were Miley’s parents thinking?” Just because this happened does not mean she is going to end up like Britney or Lindsey. Give the kid a break.

  • If any parent allows young children (birth thru 13) to watch Disney, they are asking for confusion and premature aging! The channel is not wholesome and not what we would want for a young lady! Get them away from Disney and outside or into books or somewhere that they will not be corrupted by the vulgar behavior promoted by Disney and Nick and other “children’s” stations.

  • necey says:

I dont see anything wrong with miley taking pictures like that because for one she is clothed and only appears to be nude. 15 year old girls are growing up fast and everone wants to make this picture out to be a big deal, when its nothing like that. I have seen 15 year olds and the way they dress and look you would think they were 18 or older. Now a days teenagers shouldnt be looking up to no one but somone that is close to them like thier parents not a movie star or a singer because they dont know these children and its not thier responsibilty to teach your children how to live because thier living their own life right now. its almost like the Jamie spears case, umm… hasnt anyone notice that even 13 yeal olds are having babys all around the world why make it out to be a big deal now? so what she is 16 years old and is having a baby i bet half the people who are talking about her had their children at an early age and wasnt even prepared for the child but in Jamie case its like she can affored to give this child what it needs. so no i dont feel like having a baby is a big deal because if that is the case then why dont they just start publishing magizens of everyone who is haveing a baby at 16 then you will see that its a new society and things happen. 15 year lds as well as 16 year olds are alot more mature then you think. you might think “oh my child does’nt do those things but when your not around im sure they do. I would know because im a teenager myself. And the same paretns are people wo are critizeing these pop stars you never know your child might be next to become pregnet or your child might take thier top off when your not around or they as well may pose for a magizen with no shirt on. So before you judge a child take a long look at yours and think back to all the things you did as a teen and just know that your child is doing the same thing. So dont blame these pop stars for the way your child acts blame YOURSELF!

  • It’s not Hannah’s fault even it it was who cares it’s her body her life we all make mistakes in our lives and that’s just one of her mistakes.

I really like Hannah Montana and the show alot i just don’t want it being cancled

  • sammy says:

why the people r making so much noice about it ….why don’t they take it as it is…she is a young girl and can take her decision by her self…she is really a good girl and i really her shows…i dont want the show to be cancelled…

  • mamaof1 says:

So i think that tv has made this into a huge thing. I have a child thats 4 1/2 and she saw the photo of her and didnt say a thing I think its the moms and dads that are playing it into a big problem! Shes just a kid! She did what she was told to do! Leave her alone!

I think you guys are all wrong i am 12 going into 7th grade. I look up to miley. It wasn’t Miley’s fault the photographer told her to do it. Would you say no to an expert photographer. Miley didn’t know what she was going to do. the only person to blame is The photographer for photographing it.

  • jazzmine says:

i don’t believe that hannah or miley has been naked w/ vanessa none of that is not true it’s only there comment to get miley out of the showbiz industry

  • MommyCity says:

I have to say that the pictures didn’t bother me as much as my 10 year old daughter. She cried for hours about how she couldn’t believe that “Hannah could show her naked body to the whole world.”
