One of my deepest fears was realized last Thursday, when I forgot to pickup my son at school. Well, I didn’t totally forget him, I just forgot that it was a school planning day and his class ended early.
As I was driving to school it suddenly dawned on me what day it was. “Oh god, I can’t believe I forgot!” I had even circled these days on my calendar, and chuckled when other moms had previously made the same mistake.
Fortunately, a fellow mom friend, casually took possession of my son when she noticed that he was standing there all by himself — sparing me the humiliation and reprimanding looks from the school staff while picking up my son from the office. And luckily, my poor son didn’t feel totally abandoned.
Geez, so not only am I the slacker mom who won’t volunteer, I’m the scatter brained mom who forgets about her kids. Nice start to my first year as an elementary school mom — my kids must be proud!
BTW – Cheers to my five-year-old son who remembered my cell phone number and recited it perfectly to my fellow mom. At least he has a good memory!

Don’t sweat it too much. You are a Mom, and you are aloud to make mistakes too!
I have nightmares about forgetting to pick up my kids. I am constantly checking the clock. I’m so absent-minded it IS going to happen to me too, just a matter of time.
Good thing you had a mom there who had your back!
