Diary of a wimpy what?

November 26th, 2008, 6:55 am · 2 Comments · posted by Jenny Angelici, Contributing Writer

Last month, when I was volunteering at the book fair at my son’s elementary school, I was privy to some exciting news. A cool looking 4th grader informed me that the next book in the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series, by Jeff Kinney, was scheduled to come out in January. In my mind, I was wondering what the heck he was talking about. I was to find out soon. Kid after kid kept asking for these Wimpy Kid books. We had a few, but they flew off the shelf like hot cakes – if hot cakes could fly.

Anyway, what I learned is that these books are hugely popular with the 4th through 6th grader crowd, and the kids can’t get enough of them. When I asked my little friends why they liked the books so much, they weren’t anxious to share their thoughts with me. Maybe it’s that whole stranger thing, or perhaps they knew I was a blogger and weren’t interested in being a subject.

In any case, a smarter than me, 5th grader informed me that I could read the books online at funbrain.com for FREE!  So I did…and loved them. You should check them out too. If you’re looking for some fun books for the 8-12 age set, you might want to consider the Wimpy Kid books.

Books make great gifts:

This is the FIRST chapter book that Cheetah Boy ever bought with his own money! He LOVES these. And so does his sister. She is reading one of them for the umpteenth time. Why isn’t the new book ready for Christmas? I would buy it and put it under the tree!

My son, too, found these on his own. I’ve read the first one - very funny. The illustrations are fun, too. My thought when I read it was, with my history in junior high school, why didn’t I write this? My husband points out he lived it.
