They were my friends. How could I let them go?

July 7th, 2009, 6:12 am · 10 Comments · posted by Jenny Angelici, Contributing Writer

As a mom and self-professed minimalist, I’m constantly weeding out broken and outgrown toys. But when it comes to stuffed animals and dolls, I’m weak.  So pathetic, that I still have all my friends that sat on my bed as a little girl.

In effort to clean up our garage, I had these babies bagged and ready to toss. Yep, right into the trash can. And since they had all seen better days and were dirty and worn, I didn’t think the Goodwill was an option.

So, before saying goodbye, I decided to take one more look at them. Bad idea. My boys wanted to keep them…except for the dolls. They were sure to make that clear.

My oldest son even offered to buy them from me — except for the dolls, of course.

Well, a deal was brokered and my little stuffed friends found new homes in my children’s room. That is except for the dolls. I hope the dolls will be happy up in the attic…better than a landfill.

Are you holding onto any of your old toys?

I have a few of my old toys but they are sentimental. My grandma made stuffed animals as a hobby, so I have a hand made Pooh, Kanga and Eyore, a couple dogs and a cat. My sister has Piglet and Tigger, and other dogs and cats. But other than that I think I did not save toys. My mom saved a few things like the old Preschool School House with all the little people and play equipment. She even managed to save all the letters and numbers! Now my daughter plays with it when we go over to their house. :-)

How wonderful that your grandma made stuffed animals - especially, Pooh and the gang. I’d love to see them. Also, don’t you just love seeing your daughter play with your old toys. An amazing feeling.

I have two bags full of stuffed animals (and that Ronald McDonald doll is one of them!!!) and a suitcase full of Barbies and accessories. I refuse to get rid of them, even though I didn’t have a girl to pass them on to. Maybe my sister will have a girl so I can give them to a niece :)

Barbies! I totally forgot that I have a collection of them up in the attic. So funny that you have the Ronald McDonald doll, too. I love hearing that I’m not the only one who can’t let go.

Don’t you dare toss them!!! Someday when you’re in a nursing home you can put them on your bed and be happy for the company!!
I’m glad your sons are taking them. I want that giraffe myself!

Suz - you crack me up. I can just see my friends and me enjoying our golden years together. I’m so glad I didn’t dump them. The giraffe would look lovely in your home!

I think some of your dolls need to go to Goodwill and pick up some new clothes.

I think you’re right. They all could use a makeover, too.

If yours are as real as mine are, it would break their hearts if you tossed them. And I’m SURE they are–just ask them if they want to stay with you or be sent to the ash heap in the name of some trendy, unfocused concept like “more space” or “less clutter.” They’ll guide you from there. ;-)

jillsifer - After reading your comment, I’m never going to let them go….because you’re right, they are real…to me. Thanks!
