So far we’ve spent more on my dogs’ fur than my boys’ hair

Summer is probably one of the best things about being a full-time mom. Sleeping-in and hanging out with my boys is the best.

So far, I’ve been busy doing lots of outdoorsy things and my poor laptop has been feeling a bit neglected.

I haven’t done any ironing, but I have found some irony in my summer so far:

♦Had a fun family vacation in Las Vegas, despite the fact that I don’t drink, gamble, or wear a skimpy bikini and high heels at the pool.

♦Spent $70 to have our fancy dogs’ luscious fur coats groomed. Spent $27  on hair clippers to buzz cut my boys. And spent zero on my own hair. I’m starting to live up to the “Gray Hairs” in the title of my blog.

♦Live within walking distance to the beach and drive my minivan instead.

♦Gained back the weight I lost last summer.

♦I actually feel the need to look presentable before leaving the house. Now that my son has entered elementary school my world has gotten smaller. Last summer, I hardly ever saw anyone I knew when I went to Target or grocery shopping. Now, I’m seeing familiar mom faces down each aisle.

♦My husband and I decided to hire a handyman to help us with those little projects that never get done. It’s been over a month and I haven’t called the guy. Do I need someone to help me call someone to help me?

What have you been up to this summer?

We have tons of projects we haven’t done! I feel your pain, I really do. I also spent an absurd amount of money getting all four pets (2d/2c) groomed and treated for fleas, more than a full hair treatment for myself.

That is so true about having a sense of anonymity before my kids went to school and not any more. As always, I can relate to all you have written here. The diet starts today!

Maria - I’ve got to start my back-to-school shape up program soon. Right after I finish this bowl of ice cream.

Martha - Two cats, too!! If only we could get our pets to pitch in and help around the house.

A lot of the same things as you! Isn’t it true about running into other moms everywhere? I can’t go anywhere these days without running in to someone I know. I like that. Makes me feel like I’m living in a small town.

    • Jenny Angelici, Contributing Writer says:

It does give you that small town feel. The biggest challenge is remembering new names. I think we should all wear name tags the first month of school - hmm…feels like another Seinfeld episode. In any case, I love being known as Nick and Gino’s mom.

Well, there’s one downside to sending my daughter to a private school two cities over - outside of an Ice Age themed party a couple of weeks ago, I don’t see any moms from her school unless I go out of my way to do it. On the upside - thanks to her tightknit Girl Scout troop we’ve had alot more excuses for summertime playdates.

Wow, two cities over. I’m guessing you’re in the car a lot. I find that some of our best conversations with our kids is in the car. That’s great that she has a tightknit Girl Scout troop.
