You can be sick all you want — you’re still the mama

Apparently I have the flu. The swine kind.

Oink.

So for the past few days, I’ve been in a cloud of snot and achy limbs. My cough is gnarly, but my ears are plugged so I can hardly hear it. You probably don’t want to be touching anything I’ve touched, unless you’re looking to use up some sick time.

Gross, right? Too much information?

OK, I’ll stop. You know what it’s like to be sick, and this nasty virus seems to be taking good men and women down as the hours pass.

The last time I was sick (in February!), I wrote how to kill a cold when you’re a mom.

But here are a few updated tips:

  • Call in the troops. Send your beautiful little baby off to Grammy’s. Get your neighbors to make a Target run for Gatorade and drugs. Ask. For. Help. (This one’s a tough one for me, so I had to list it first.)
  • If you can’t pawn off the spawn, think of it as “anything goes” time. Yes, he’s littering your home with toys and whatever other random object he can reach. But if it means he’s quiet, it’s worth the mess to get some stress-free rest. This doesn’t make you a bad mommy, provided the electrical sockets are properly secured.
  • This would be an appropriate time for a Snuggie. In SoCal, there isn’t much of a need to own a blanket with sleeves, but staying warm when you’re sick is a good excuse to fall for this infomercial.
  • Two words: wonton soup. Hands down, this is my favorite feel-good food. If you order from any Thai restaurant in OC, you’ll get a water-based broth with tons of vitamin-filled green veggies, a protein of some sort (usually chicken), and a bit of carb to keep you stable.

Good luck out there!

Holy Hogs! Take care of yourself. Thank goodness you have such a great support system. How did you manage to write this post?. For some reason I feel the need to go wash my hands now. Yikes!

    • Samantha says:

Oh man Roxanne…i hope you are feeling better soon.

Jenny, you and I are on the smae vibe. As soon as I read Roxannes post, I looked to my left and proceeded to use some hand sanitizer.

hahaha you guys are funny. how gross would the world be if you could send those kind of viruses via the internet??

  • MrsHashBrown says:

Being sick with a baby at home is bad, but having a sick baby at the same time makes it the WORST! Hope you both feel much better soon!

I feel your pain. When you are the mommy, you don’t get sick time. Hang in there!!!

So sorry you’re feeling ratty (piggy?). Hang in there–it gets better.

I’ve been fighting microbes for nearly a week BUT this time, my almost-15-year-old has been taking care of me. He hijacked his grandmother into taking him to the store for various OTC remedies (and apparently he made quite a big deal out of reading all the labels and comparing side effects), then insisted she take him to my favorite bakery for a small selection of treats. (Chocolate is the ONLY thing I can taste when I’m sick.)

Seriously. Older kids are an absolute godsend when Momma is sick.

In the meantime, best wishes for a fast and complete recovery!
