All this time I’ve been thinking that my nicknames for my son were terms of endearment: monster and bug. But as he grows into this stage of curiosity and independence, I wonder if the monikers are more prophetic than I care to admit.
He is pretty darn cute though, if I do say so myself. (And I do.)
Here are some photos — each one taken on my iPhone — of him doing his best at being a 1-year-old boy.

What have your kids been up to?
More from me and my monster:
My daughter is having a hard deciding what she wants to be for Halloween: Tinkerbell, a cute witch, or a trash can. Yes, I said a trash can. That was her idea.
Sam’s way cute!!!
a trash can!! haha that’s a very creative idea
I think I was a trash BAG once, but that was a pretty spur-of-the-moment kind of thing. trash can is much more inventive.
Like the talking trash can at Disneyland! Ha! =)
Thanks to my daughter’s love of cancelled TV shows, we scored her the Raven (Teen Titans) costume she’s wanted since last year. Which makes this her second year as a DC comics superheroine.
But recently we’ve gotten her into playing a game called “Monsterpocalypse” which involves collecting little plastic figures of 1950s movie monsters (albeit with generic non-copywrite infringing names), which then have fights in little plastic cities where they knock down buildings and each other. Given our shared love of such cinematic classics as the “Godzilla” movies, and episodes of “Mystery Science Theater 3000″, this has been a perfect game for our little family. And it’s teaching her strategy, math, and how to be a good sport (we participate in tournaments every other weekend).
(Where’s the strategy and math come in? You have to track the different monsters and their minions, which all have different skills, powers, and ability scores. The game can be really simple, or reach chess tournament levels of complication. We got our daughter started with the basics, but she’s mastering the system at an impressive rate. And she’s very happy with the “King Kong” style army of giant apes she recently acquired.)
