Buddy the Wonder Dog got out this morning through a loose fence post and got hit by a car.
Apparently it was only a glancing blow, because he was hauled home by Cheetah Boy with only a tiny cut on his head.
Cheetah Boy missed seeing the actual collision, but Buddy ran across a busy street apparently and collided with a car, according to a lady who saw the whole thing.
He then continued on up to a church, where Cheetah Boy was able to catch him and fetch him back.
We didn’t even know Buddy was out of the yard, he apparently took advantage of a loose fence post.
That dog is always patrolling the perimeter to find some way to escape the horrible San Quentin known as our house.
Now, I’m trying to decide if I need to take the morning off to take him to the vet.
He seems okay, a little shaken up, but other than the cut, nothing seems injured. He’s trotting around, still wondering if he can get out again.
If I take him to the vet, there goes my entire morning, plus a million tests to pay for.
He wolfed down two hot dogs, so I don’t think he’s fatally injured.
Curly Girl has been sobbing uncontrollably ever since her brother brought Buddy home. I can only imagine what it will be like if he gets seriously injured, or when he gets seriously injured, since he’s always so determined to escape.
Ack! Why can’t we have a nice boring dog who wants to stay home? My friend Susan’s dog won’t leave her side even at the dog park.
But then we are not a nice boring family that likes to stay home. Maybe he picks it up from us.

Ohhhh, am sorry! Good wishes to Buddy, hope he recovers and is back to his old self (w/o the wanderlust part!) soon!!
OMG! You need to put that dog in JAIL!!!!! LOL Ü!!!
That’s awful! Buddy looks like he’s got Corgi in him - he so cute! We have a Corgi and he loves to chase birds in the park and will run around in circles like a maniac - it’s they’re herding instinct.
I actually feel a little sick now, I don’t know if it’s delayed shock over what happened to Buddy, or I’m coming down with Cheetah Boy’s flu….
Marla, I missed your call this morning but now realize it was probably about Buddy!
I think you’re safe to keep a close watch on Buddy to gauge his condition. Watch for lethargic behavior or wobbly legs, which might indicate a concussion. He’s likely bruised and will feel the effects of that more tomorrow and the next day, just like us bi-peds after an accident.
There’s a small chance he could have a fracture lurking somewhere, so watch for swelling or limping in the legs impacted by the collision.
Most vets would recommend a visit, but I am one who will advocate a pet owner use their best judgment in situations like this one. Trust your Mom Sense and go with your gut.
You are so much like all the rest of us, same old stuff, same old decisions to make. If Buddy is eating and being himself, he should be fine. My decision on trips to the doctor or vet has always been based on blood - our Mom instincts tell us when it’s enough blood. Hope you are not catching the flu bug, drink lots of fluids and stay low.
Hope Buddy’s still Ok and you’re not getting the flu. That’s a great picture of Curly Girl and Buddy. I don’t envy you in a few more years when the boys are knocking the door down cuz you have a beautiful daughter!
Sounds like another adventure in 2009 -
I think you are ready for a new year already!!!
We have all had those years and feel for you.
I am so glad the dog seems o.k. and hope will not do that again…
Keep smiling!
It sounds like Buddy is okay. He seems like he is one tough guy - afterall, he is a Wonder Dog. Meanwhile, I’ll keep keep my fingers crossed. Please keep us posted.
Oh, my gosh, Marla! A close call indeed. I agree with Samantha - watch for signs of a concussion/internal bleeding. Otherwise, my vet always tells me, if they’re eating, walking/running, there are no external wounds or bleeding, and their intestinal tract seems in good order (ahem), then things are probably OK. That advice has saved me many a trip to the vet, for which I would have essentially paid for the same reassurance. I’m such a kittymom that I will run to the vet if she sneezes weirdly…!
The kids just walked in the door from school and the first thing they wanted was to check out their pooch. He seems a little low energy but he’s trotting around and eating fine, so I think he’ll be okay.
In Buddy’s defense, let me say that when I was at Marla’s house the other day, he politely sat on command and not only allowed me to come in the house, but later, repeated this gentlemanly act and, again without bolting for the door, allowed me to exit. Good boy, Buddy.
Well believe it or not, Buddy must be fine because he GOT OUT AGAIN! He pushed open that loose board that we thought we’d secured and tonight, at 8:30 p.m. our doorbell rang and it was a neighbor returning our pooch. They all know him now. Obviously he can’t be allowed outside alone again until we nail a new board on that fence, and then get it replaced entirely!
Marla, I am so happy that Buddy is it appears ok. When I visited you and was caring for the children while you were ill, Buddy escaped 3 times. Each time I exhausted myself trying to catch him. . Cheeta Boy is fantastic when it came to catching Wonder Dog. I fell in love with the great people of Orange County when they so kindly called me when they found Buddy’s tag and every time brought him back. One time a man saw him on a very busy road and caught him and returned him to me.

Marla…. Last week in Riverside County, there was a story of a little girl who was attacked by a couple of dogs… who also had escaped from their yard… She was miraculously saved by an alert neighbor. Let us be thankful that Buddy is ok… and he’s not vicious!
Consider the following:
DOGS OFF-LEASH
>
>
> When you’re out in public, beware of “dogs off-leash”….
> it’s a obvious danger, the owners we must teach!
>
> Dogs are unpredictable, so it’s rather foolish….
> it’s also irresponsible, and down right selfish!
>
> It doesn’t matter it’s size, it’s clearly inappropriate….
> please heed this advice, it shows you’re considerate!
>
> It’s just not fair to others, in fact, it’s against the law….
> what if it was your Mother, caught in the dog’s jaw?
>
> The bottomline is its not safe, and may cause great harm…
> if your “dogs off-leash”, please heed this alarm!
>
> Your kids will soon learn, to be better planners….
> a leash on your dog, is considered good-manners!

Hi Marla,
I enjoyed your column this morning as always, but I really identified with this column. When my two sons were small, we had Zorro the Wonder Dog. She was a small black cockapoo we got as a puppy. She was a terror. We couldnt keep her in the yard no matter what we did, so I finally gave up, figuring she would get hit by a car or picked up by someone. Then I saw a lady open her car door one day and try to coax Zorro in. Zorro got close enough to the woman to snap at her and the lady wasted no time slamming her door and driving off. So much for someone picking her up. She never got hit by a car, either.
Zorro almost met her demise twice. Once she was digging under the chain link fence, got her collar caught, and rolled over and over until she almost strangled herself to death. I got her untangled just in time. She was unconscious and her heart was only beating about 6 times a minute. She revived from that one, but I’m sure she had a bit of brain damage. The next time was when she was outside and one of the neighbor dogs, Barney (a large shepherd mix), was going for a walk with his owner, an elderly lady. Zorro would always go to Barney’s fence and taunt him when she was loose. Barney saw his chance on this day and his owner wasn’t able to hold him. He charged Zorro, got her in his mouth, and I was sure she was a goner. Somehow she got away from him and lived to tell the tale.
Zorro lived to be 17 years old and died peacefully of old age in her bed at home. Not a bad life for a really annoying little dog.
I have Golden Retrievers now. They behave.
Hello! Take your dog to the vet! If your daughter got hit by a car would you sit her down on the couch and feed her two hot dogs and say, oh, she must be fine??? Are you crazy? Your dog cannot speak and may have major internal injuries. I am amazed at the lackadaisical attitude towards your pet. I am assuming you wouldn’t treat your child like that so why would you treat your pet that way? You are not setting a good example to your children.
Uh, hello, he’s not my daughter. He’s a DOG. Dogs are not children nor are they substitutes for children. They are animals. I also would not allow my children to poop in the yard and make them sleep in a crate.
Yeah ! May be your buddy has adopted the habit of wandering around to see the world and making new friends. Mostly dogs have a strong eager to explore the things around them, so don’t worry about that but you must increase the safety measures.
