I’m a big believer in things happening for a purpose. So today on my way to work, I paid special attention to the digital sign along the freeway that Giant RV uses to let passers-by know about the joys of road trips.

But they also use that sign as a billboard for messages about life. Like the one that caught my eye — and soul — today: “Joy is not out there. It’s inside you.”

That’s so true, isn’t it? It made me smile, and reflect on what I had to be joyful about that very minute.

• The Dodgers had a great season despite losing in the championship series. Same for the Angels. And it’s only about 100 more days before pitchers and catchers report again. (They were on my mind because I just read another story about the nasty rift between Dodger owners Frank and Jamie McCourt. It’s a joy not to be them.)

• A beautiful blue sky that promised the kind of wonderful weather that makes Southern California still a desired destination, despite our economic and political woes.
• Friday morning traffic. It is typically lighter than the rest of the week, but today even more so. I sailed along the entire way to work.
• My bills were all paid for the month and I had $10 in my pocket before hitting the ATM for the weekly household allowance. And I still had half a tank of gas.
• A colleague who is a wonderful guy is getting married today — to a woman life separated him from more than 40 years ago. They found each other again and the love was still there.
• My son is off at college back East. He’s visiting a friend, but I figure that is a step in the right direction toward getting him back in the classroom.

There’s more, but I don’t want to go on and on. I’ll bet you’ve got your own joy inside that you might be smiling about right now. So I’ll get out of the way and let you do it. And feel free to share.
