Thanks to this week’s Google Logo, you probably already know that this year marks Sesame Street’s 40th on television. Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 10, its actual anniversary date, new episodes will air on PBS in place of the re-runs we’ve had to endure all summer.
There is some discussion over whether or not Sesame Street is still relevent, which surprises me to be quite honest. There aren’t a lot of good things on TV these days — even a self-proclaimed addict like me can admit that — so I tend to really latch on to the few things I do feel comfortable letting my son watch. A show full of furry monsters who teach you numbers and ABC’s is definitely on the good list.
Is it outdated? Possibly. Is there anything wrong with that? Not in my book.
It’s a virtual place I can take my child where the economy hasn’t effected the neighborhood. It’s dependable and trustworthy. It’s safe. It’s Sesame Street, for crying out loud!
My son favors Elmo, whose voice can get a little annoying after awhile. But I’m pretty sure I owe thanks to the little red guy for my 14-month-old son being able to sing along to the Alphabet Song with, “Aaaaa-Eeeeee.” However, sometimes in the middle of the night, I’m haunted by Elmo’s Song. I prefer it when he’s riding his tricycle.
When I was a kid, I was a big fan of Grover, especially when he wore his red cape. I can still remember reading “The Monster at the End of This Book” over and over. My favorite segment was the Teeny Little Superguy — who lived in a cup and taught me things like sharing, and the safe way to cross the street.
Nowadays, the animated learning segments continue, and celebrity guests still visit and sing with the gang.
So what’s not to love? Who is your kid’s favorite monster? Who was yours?
Happy 40th, Sesame Street!
More from me and my monster:
Their spoofs on adult serious are the best! The Mad Men spoof is hilarious…at least that makes it interesting to the parents watching with their kids.
should be “series” not “serious”
Sesame Street has always been a big hit in our house. Beaker, the little wild looking scientist creature, was always my favorite muppet.
1969 was a great year for muppets, that Hungry Catepillar and men walking on the moon. Happy 40th!
I thought Beaker was only The Muppet Show? I guess they did cross overs though. I vaguely remember a sketch where Beaker was trying to demonstrate some contraption and Cookie Monster kept trying to eat it.
You’re probably right - I get all those creatures confused.
s’ok. I love them all!
And Muppets characters do show up on Sesame Street and vice versa. It’s well established that they share a universe and that Sesame Street exists somewhere close to The Muppet Theater, in the same fictionalized New York City.
I still love Sesame Street, even if it’s never on when we’re home anymore.
My daughter still loves Elmo and watches the videos. I have been known to spontaneously start singing “Elmo’s Song” - I just know some day I’m going to be old and not be able to remember anything but that song.
After seeing the Google logo with Big Bird, I was thinking we need to find that Big Bird movie they did many years ago. I remember loving it.
Food Network actually tipped us off to the anniversary because they did a special episode of “Dinner: Impossible” featuring Elmo and Cookie Monster helping cook a kid friendly 40th anniversary meal, where all the foods had to be “brought to you by the letter B”. Watching Chef Irvine try to cook with Muppets trying to “help” was hilarious. Loved it.
FOLLOW THAT BIRD!! hahaha. I loved that movie!!

That’s it!
To Blockbuster! (Or Netflix. I wonder if it’s available on Netflix streaming. Note to self to check from my home computer.)
haha my mom totally bought it when she found out I was pregnant, convinced she needed that as well as a bunch of other old kid movies and songs so she could show her grandbaby. eventually Sam will learn to love it as well, I’m sure
Aha! It was on Netflix streaming. We watched it on Sunday in celebration. (It holds up surprisingly well. Even if my daughter has no idea who Chevy Chase or John Candy are, and has never heard of SCTV.
She caught something I never noticed before though - if you keep an eye out during the Welcome HOME celebration for Big Bird, Elmo is waving from one of the apartment windows. It’s funny to think there was a time where he wasn’t the most popular character on the show. =)
I LOVE Sesame Street. I enjoyed Sesame Street with my children, and now I’m enjoying it with my Grand-daughter! It’s the only thing I’ll let her watch on TV when she’s visiting, because it’s educational as well as entertaining. She loves all the Sesame Street characters, and usually walks around with an Elmo doll in one hand, and a Grover doll in the other.
