From an almost-grandma: Every parent’s nightmare

Hot Flashlost and foundHere’s what you don’t want to do when your daughter is 7 months pregnant: look for your sunglasses when you are wearing them.

Your daughter panics, thinking you’re going to lose her baby, or set it somewhere where you can’t find it.

It’s not as if I ever lost her or left her behind at the gas station. OK, I did lose her … in Mexico, but it was only briefly and it was her fault. She was hiding between the clothing racks.

But I don’t fault my daughter for being worried. As far as I am concerned, it means she has the correct instinct – worry – which is what motherhood is all about.

Speaking of leaving a kid behind, my friend Jack left his 2-year-old at a new car dealership. He was so excited with his purchase that he raced home to show the wife his shiny new truck, and she promptly responded with, “where’s the baby?” Whoops!

  • I was halfway home one night after work when I realized I had left my son in my tracks at his after-school daycare. I was lucky because they offered extended hours (up to 24 hours if it was an emergency!), so while it cost me extra he was safe. But he did ask what took me so long. I didn’t have the heart to tell him I had forgotten about him.

I lost my daughter at Target once - I thought she was following me but she got distracted looking at toys. After running around the store in a mad panic I heard my name over the loudspeaker. I guess I did something right as a mom, because my daughter had gone straight to the phone operator booth and requested they page me.

When I was young, maybe 3, my mother took me with her shopping at Sears. Before she realized I was lost, I had found an associate and told them my mother’s full name. They paged her and I apparently was much relieved! She was surprised…I’d been hiding in the clothes too! I got lost again as a young teen, but that was on a camping trip and much more scary for all involved!!

Cindy you totally made me laugh out loud. I remember once my parents took us on a road trip and we hung in the back of the station wagon with the seat down. They stopped at a gas station to gas up. Unbeknownst to them, I climbed out of the back of the car and toddled off to the bathroom. They drove off without me. I came out of the bathroom and found them gone. Then, I sat down to wait for them. I figured they would be back eventually. Finally, a long time later, my mom turned around to talk to me and realized I wasn’t there. I imagine there was a lot of screaming. I just waited patiently until they returned.

When I adopted my kids they had never been in a big shopping mall. They were age 3 and 5. I took them to see Santa at a mall and each of them was so overstimulated they started running in opposite directions in the mall! I completely freaked out because at that point they were just my foster kids and I was sure if anythign happened that social services would take them away from me. Somehow I got them both back but after that I made my daughter wear a harness for quite awhile when we went somewhere like that. She actually loved the harness and would try to gallop me like a horse.

How exciting that you are about to become a grandma. Big congratulations!

I haven’t actually lost either of my sons, but I have forgotten to pick up my oldest one at school a couple of times during planning days when they get out early. Now, I always make sure to post reminders around the house on those days.

When my son was born my daughter was 18 months old. I got my daughter dressed to go to the market and when I was half way through shopping, it dawned on me……………I didn’t have Jimmy with us!!! My heart sunk down to my feet!! I left the grocery cart, drove home as fast as I could and when we got home he was sleeping peacefully in his crib………..just where I left him.
