bigbookphotoSorry dear animals, but books will be the stars today of “From A-to-Zoo” at Santa Ana Zoo.

The Children and Families Commission of Orange County is hosting the event, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and will give away free books to kids 5 and under to encourage early literacy.

Look for the Big Books Booth in the zoo’s amphitheatre. It’s easy to spot — giant-sized children’s books, comfy bean bags and shelves of regular-sized books.

There will be story time readings and parent resources, too.  Zoo admission is free to kids 3 and younger, $5 for kids ages 4-12, and $8 for adults.

“From A-to-Zoo” is part of the commission’s Child Literacy Month activities in November.

This Saturday and Nov. 28, Early Literacy Program volunteers will give out free children’s books, model reading to children, and talk to parents about literacy from noon-4 p.m. at Adventure City, 1238 S. Beach Blvd., Anaheim. Find them in the Airport Shuttle waiting room inside the amusement park.

The commission is also supporting free developmental and health screenings in conjunction with these community organizations:

Family Support Network: Families can begin lining up at 8 a.m. for complete developmental screenings today from 9-11 a.m. at South Orange County Family Resource Center, 23832 Rockfield Boulevard, Suite 270, Lake Forest.

MOMS Orange County’s Vietnamese Health Fair: Health screenings 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Bao Quang Temple, 713 N. Newhope St., Santa Ana. Early Literacy Program volunteers will model reading habits to parents and give out free children’s books.
